Look at these fingers!!

Here they are!

The reveal to all of you.

These beautiful, tiny thumbs and pinkies.

We still have to keep bandages on her hands even though the grafts have taken and healed. We have to use gauze to keep pressure on the new web spaces between her fingers so that scar tissue doesn't grow and pull them back together.

We joke that she has boxing gloves on, but the bandaging is nice and minimal compared to what she had before. We go back to the plastic surgeon next week and my fingers are crossed for no more bandaging at all.

We don't have to cover her hands with sock anymore so at least she's getting to feel objects with part of her hand, but removing the bandages will be so nice. I feel like she hasn't had the opportunity to see what can be done with her new fingers since they're tightly bound all the time. I wonder whether we'll have to do any physical/occupational therapy with her or if she will figure it out on her own. We've noticed some tiny movements with a couple of the digits, but nothing big and not with all of them. So, we'll have to wait and see and just continue to encourage her on a daily basis.

My hope is that she'll get the hang of them pretty quickly once those little fingers and thumbs are set free for good.

We went on a walk today to the school down the road to vote. We then took the long way home which allowed us to walk through a little wooded area with a pond. Abby enjoyed seeing some ducks in the water and we had a little conversation about why I didn't need to put all the pretty leaves back on the trees. I love the learning and exploring stage that Abby is in right now. She's exhausting when it comes to discipline and boundary setting, but talking to her about the seasons and the cycle of tree leaves was refreshing and quite enjoyable. Children bring you back to the basics and make you see the world from an angle that you haven't looked from in a long, long time. We gathered some fallen leaves and will get crafty with them in the days to come.

Oh, and children are so very entertaining. They keep life light and fresh.

I'm working on the post I promised you about Julia's upcoming surgery. It's a work in progress at the moment though....lots of diagrams and science-y stuff to work through for you all. So stay tuned :)

Surgery, Recovery, and Christmas

Hey everyone!! I can't believe it has been so long since I last wrote on here. It makes me realize just how crazy busy we were over the holidays - well, over the entire month of December, really. We are now into 2016. Can you believe it?! Another year has come and gone, and now we stand in the first days of a new one. What will this next year hold? Your guess is as good as mine. I have grand dreams and goals for myself and my family - so we shall see what 2016 brings to us! It feels like SO, so long ago already, but Julia had her frontal orbital advancement surgery on November 27th, 2015 just as planned. We had to be at the hospital bright and early like last time - 6:45am, with her last feeding at 2:45am. So once again, I set my alarm for 2:30am and got up to nurse her one last time before she began fasting. We arrived and went into pre-op. Got her dressed up in her little gown, and waited for the nurse to come take her away. It was both harder and easier this time. We knew ...

How to Meal Plan

Happy October! So. I took on the task of meal planning again yesterday and decided to try doing it for the entire month of October; just like I did all of September last time. I am accustomed to doing two week planning but decided to buckle down and do the entire month again. It was a lot harder this time around! I think it was due to the fact that I just don't have the same volume of stuff in the freezer to use so I had to come up with meals that both used up things in the house AND required new items to be bought. Last month was strictly using up what I had in the house already (except dairy and veggies) so I knew exactly what I had to work with. This time was much more open-ended; I'm coming to learn that I do better when I have less options to choose from. I actually find it quite daunting to have limitless possibilities. I figured I would walk you guys through my meal planning process. I had a friend of mine do the same a while ago (check her out  here ) and i...

The New Year and Another Surgery

Holy moly, where does the time go?? It still feels like yesterday that we were walking through the recovery process from Julia's frontal orbital advancement surgery, but it was 5 months ago! I see photos of her from before the surgery and I can hardly remember her little face and the shape it used to be, yet surgery seems to have barely come and gone; it's funny how the concept of time can be so skewed. When I start looking back through photos, though, I realize how many things have happened in between then and now. Winter time and Christmas have come and gone. We had a few small sprinklings of snow and we took every opportunity to get outside. Abby was all about building snowmen this year (surprisingly, she hasn't even watched Frozen, so we can't blame it on that!), so we would take the 24 hours window of time we had before the snow melted and build a snowman. With the start of 2016 came a very long string of doctor's appointments. All the specialis...
